Italian Restaurant & Bar
Antigua Guatemala
Since 1996, Caffé Mediterraneo has offered authentic Italian cuisine for the delight of locals and visitors. We offer a menu of dishes prepared with fresh ingredients found in the local market, and the ingredients vary according to the season. We aim to offer the taste found in traditional Italian home cooking.
Francesco Marchese is the owner and Chef of Caffé Mediterraneo, he was born in Rossano Calabria, in southern Italy. He moved to Guatemala in 1996 and opened the restaurant along with his Guatemalan wife, Leonora. In a short amount of time, the restaurant became very popular among the people from Guatemala City.
During all this time, the Chef Francesco Marchese has been the head of the restaurant, making the quality of the products a constant priority. The Chef has also participated as a guest on the morning show “Viva la Mañana” on Guatevision, and has also taken part in private cooking lessons to small groups.
The restaurant also takes care of private events, such as job meetings, weddings, etc., which can take place in other sites besides the restaurant, such as ruins and hotels.
One day by chance I found this place. Has it ever happened to you that you eat something and your palate says this is what you needed? Well, that was my experience in this place. The prices were a little high, but it was a very nice experience. I visited it at night and it is a very romantic place. I will return when I can.
Avoid the place - The owner is very rude. He has one waiter and both had zero, absolutely zero patience with us to order. They try to make you order the most expensive dishes and when you order a small plate (because we already ate before), they try to convince you is not enough, and then you see the plate from another member of our group and it was twice the size they told us. However the main problem is the attitude. Terrible service. The prices are as I f it was a great restaurant, but they don’t care for the customer experience. Save the hassle and just go to another restaurant.
we have been to too many Italian restaurants around the world…this has to be the worst ever. the only plus is the location. Let me start by saying..there’s a lack of waitstaff. The whole operation is run by a 2 man team. 1 waiter and 1 chef/owner. The waiter is run like a work horse and we hope he gets compensated very well for all the work he does. the Chef/owner has to be the rudest person we have encountered. He comes very arrogant!!!! he comes to you and tries to explain the over complicated menu in Spanish. He got upset whenever we said the kids don’t understand Spanish. He replied with “you should have told me before”. At this point we were so frustrated with him…we just ordered a caprese salad (it was just ok) and a calamari (a total mess, even the homeless would give it back). We got the overpriced bill and left. Never to return and definitely will share with everyone about This horrible place.
On our last day in Antigua, we decided to try this place and it was a very pleasant surprise. It was midday and the place was practically all to ourselves. Excellent service, even the owner came by to ask how everything was. We enjoyed a burrata and two different pastas, everything was exquisite! 100% recommended if you want to treat yourself!
